Onset and Rime Flip Book

The Perfect Center Activity for Word Families and Blending

I was so inspired by a picture on Pinterest that I had to sit down and make an activity that was a simple printable version of this onset and rime flip book.

For people that are not so inclined, you can totally cut up the word strips that are crammed in your teacher closet. Simply write word families on them and cut. Add some construction paper with a variety of onsets to the rimes and you are ready to rock!

You can even add nonsensical onset letters to test student comprehension. For my version, I went with all ‘words’ so that it was more focused on blending over comprehension.

    How to DIY It…

When it came time to make mine, I opted for some Google Font action (because I love pretty fonts). I went with a clear one that was easy to read and trace with a finger. I targeted just CVC blends (with some CCVCs tossed in to make the best use of printer ink). From there I started making books.

I loved how the books turned out. They are simple but so effective. Again, you can easily do this with a Sharpie and the paper already in your classroom. But… if you are looking for something more polished (and want to save yourself on prep time) click here to score the one I made.

Ideas for Using an Onset and Rime Flip Book

The Onset and Rime Flip Books are essential tools for any teacher looking to engage their students in hands-on learning and reading intervention activities. These versatile flip books are perfect for small group instruction, literacy centers, and even homework assignments.

Here are a few ideas for activities that can be done in small groups or centers using the Onset and Rime Flip Book:

    1. Word Building Scavenger Hunt: Divide students into small groups and give each group a set of the Onset and Rime Flip Books. Have them work together to read as many words as they can using the onsets and rimes provided in the flip books. The group that reads the most words in a set amount of time wins a prize.
    2. Onset and Rime Match-Up: Print out a set of onset and rime cards and have students work in pairs or small groups to match the onsets and rimes to a build words list. Once they’ve built a set number of words, have them use the words in sentences.
    3. Word Building Challenge: Create a word-building challenge for students to complete using the Onset and Rime Flip Books. For example, challenge students to build and then read as many words as they can using the “at” onset and “op” rime within a set amount of time.
    4. Word Building Race: Divide students into teams and provide each team with a set of Onset and Rime Flip Books. Have students race against each other to correctly blend and read as many words as they can using the onsets and rimes provided.
    5. Word Building Game: Create a game where students draw a card with an onset and then use the flip books to find as many words as they can with that onset. The first one to reach a certain amount of words wins.

These are just a few ideas, and you can be creative and adapt them to your student’s needs and levels. If you need more ideas targeting reading for students with significant disabilities, check out these two posts: Phonemic Awareness IEP Goals and Instructional Strategies for Reading Centers.

Good luck teaching blends and have fun making this activity (I did)!
